What is International Paramedics Day?
International Paramedics Day is a global event held every 8 July to recognise paramedics and first responders. The Royal College of Paramedics in the UK launched the day in 2022 to honour the personal sacrifices made by pre-hospital emergency care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The event has since grown to more than 140 organisations across over 30 countries.
8 July is the anniversary of the birth of Dominique-Jean Larrey, who designed the first purpose-built ambulances, light horse-drawn wagons that carried wounded soldiers off the battlefield for treatment, and he set up a triage system that paramedics still use to sort patients by who needs care first.
What Emergency First Responders Do Across Australia
Paramedics provide the emergency response most people picture when they think of an ambulance. They begin treatment well before anyone reaches a hospital. On any shift, paramedics handle cardiac arrests, road crashes, breathing trouble, serious bleeding, falls and overdoses. They assess your condition, give treatment such as CPR, oxygen or pain relief, and decide whether you need to go to hospital.
Paramedics work beyond the ambulance too. Some handle telephone triage lines, guiding callers through what to do and sending the right level of help. Others work in remote and offshore locations such as mine sites and oil rigs, in community roles that check on patients at home, and alongside doctors and nurses in clinics.

International Paramedics Day honours the people who answer emergencies. But that early help can also come from an ordinary person who is there at the time. One hands-on way to honour paramedics is to learn first aid yourself. A first aid course teaches you to act in the first minutes of an emergency, when fast help can make the biggest difference to someone’s chances. When you enrol in first aid training, you stand among those able to act when someone’s life is on the line.
